Old Layouts Daily Tidbits Character of the Month: Gimli Extras
Everybody who has read The Lord of the Rings has to like Pippin a little bit. He's irresistible; the silly hobbit that almost gave them all away at Bree, the foolish hobbit that set all the orcs of Moria after the company, the clever hobbit that cut his bonds in the orc camp, the ridiculously stupid hobbit that gazed into the orthanc stone, and the brave hobbit that ran down to the battle to fetch Gandalf in order to save Faramir. Pippin's essence is foolish and funny, a good friend and great comrade, even though he seems to have a gift for doing stupid things. If you've read the books, you just gotta love Pippin. And Billy Boyd brings it all to the screen. His looks, his voice, his looks, his superb acting ability, his looks, his great skill in being a hobbit and, finally, his looks. When you see him with his adorable curly hobbit wig you think: Peregrin Took. He just is Pippin. It's amazing. All the casting for the hobbits was superb, but where would the movie be without Billy Boyd as Pippin? Where would the scene in The Chamber of Mazar-Bul be without Pippin's adorable wince as the skeleton clattered down? Anybody can knock a skeleton down a well, but could anybody els look so... so perfect as they do it? And what about the scene in the common-room at Bree? He looks so cute as he's sipping his pint with all the big people, and who else could have made that sound so wonderful: "Baggins? Sure I know a Baggins. He's over there. Frodo Baggins. He's my second cousin, once removed, on his mother's side. And my third cousin-" And then his expression of utter astonishment as he looks at the spot where Frodo vanished. It's just wonderful. He looks great when he's frightened, too. I love the part on Weathertop after Sam's been hurled aside and Pippin and Merry push together to protect Frodo. Pippin looks so good; he's scared to death but till willing to do whatever's necessary to protect his friend. And of course I cannot forget the Council of Elrond. "And anyway, you need people of intelligence on this sort of mission... quest... thing!" Every time I watch the movie I giggle uproariously at this scene and usually rewind to play it again. And I just love it when Merry says, "Well that rules you out" and Pippin realizes a second too late that it wasn't a compliment. I just love him with all my heart as he looks around happily for a few moments and then glares at Merry. He also looks good in battle. I adore the expression on his face before he and Merry leap onto the cave troll, and I love it love it when he charges at the orcs after Boromir's been shot the third time. And both times, his high-pitched battle scream... I love Pippin so much! Pippin is wonderful, cute, adorable, handsome, superb, fantastic, completely amazing and just... just Pippin, a lovable hobbit. |
